Question:

We learned through alternative therapy that our brains have a huge unconscious part, and there is more recognition in neuroscience that most of our behaviors are driven by the unconscious part of our brains. How likely can the unfaithful achieve recovery when the unconscious isn’t addressed in therapy? As Karl Jung wrote: “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” The book Road Less Travelled by Scott Peck also acknowledges the unconscious brain. Some of the theories that I have come across relating to the unconscious that contributes to infidelity are that (some) unfaithful men are "mama's boy" and hence, they go after unavailable women and/or sabotage their relationships with their partners. Or they simply try to get their mate to “mother” them and thus, create an unhealthy relationship. Or they sabotage their relationships because they unconsciously don't believe that they deserve a good and healthy relationship. Or it is because of the "vanishing twin syndrome” where the unfaithful is searching for their “soul mate”/deceased twin. Are these valid? I notice that most therapists and modalities including AR don’t speak about the unconscious brain and how it drives our behaviors. Is acknowledging and working on the unconscious brain important? Can you share what are your views on this?
