Question:

I am the unfaithful and I had an emotional affair with a family member. The possibility of reconciliation is non existent. Our children are cousins. Our children were very close and ask about them daily. My spouse and I have chosen to say that they will not see one another for a long time. The explanation is basic but they are young, under 8. The time will come when we will give a more complete explanation. It is painful to see their pain as they pretend play with them, set gifts aside, make them drawings. Do you have advice on how to handle the situation? Do we erase all pictures in an attempt to minimize memories? Do we redirect conversation when they come up? I don’t want to create further damage to our kids and I am at a loss of how to handle the situation.
