Question:

Three years ago, I discovered my husband’s affair with a close friend of mine. He, along with her and her husband, blamed my anxiety and struggles for the affair. At the time, I was overwhelmed with our daughter's trauma—she struggles with severe separation and sleep anxiety. We lacked family or a support system nearby. My husband’s work keeps him out of town weekly, and he’s often unsupportive, critical, and dismissive. He invalidates my concerns and gaslights me, while validating our daughter’s behavior and criticizing me in front of her. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria, which makes parenting even harder. My narrow window of tolerance means I struggle to manage my daughter’s trauma behaviors effectively. The affair partner, ironically, became a source of support, making my daughter and I feel safe and heard. My husband, however, distanced himself, claiming my anxiety was the issue and wishing I could parent like her. He’s emotionally avoidant, offering scripted, unemotional responses that feel insincere. It’s been three years since the first discovery (and two since he tried contacting her again). We went through EMS Online and made progress when he was more invested. Now, while he says he’s trying, his answers remain short, detached, and lack emotion. Though he claims he no longer blames me, I can’t unhear the accusations from the past. I’m questioning how to believe him when his efforts feel hollow. How can I rebuild trust when his words still feel scripted and devoid of genuine empathy?
