Question

My husband had an affair with the same woman twice, each about 3 1/2 years in length separated by a span of about five years. It wasn’t until my discovery after the second round that I realized the intense sexual and emotional nature of the affair. We have talked a lot about compartmentalization because I thought we had a very happy and fulfilling marriage. I recently discovered that my husband sometimes communicated with her on an app while sitting in the same room with me. How can I make sense of compartmentalization when I’m sitting right there? How is it possible to compartmentalize in that case?

What type of affair was it?
