Question

In the period leading up to the affair, my partner developed a cocaine addiction. As part of that, he became increasingly hyper-focused on sexual fantasies, kinks and stimulation. I know that cocaine and/or MDMA were always involved when they met, that the relationship was strictly sexual in nature, and that they spent entire nights at each others homes several times. I do have some past experience with recreational drug-use, and I am all too aware of these substances ability to enhance sexual experiences. I’ve gained an understanding of the underlying factors behind the affair, and that has helped a lot. He is in 12-steps for the drug addiction and he is putting in the work on healing the relationship. We are having good heart-to-heart conversations about everything, and I feel like I am starting to integrate and come to terms with many aspects of the betrayal. Despite the relational repair taking place, the sexual aspect is not getting better - at all. I think I would be better able to handle it if it was "just" normal sex - but everything I know paints a picture of an intense, extreme, substance-fueled sexual relationship. I know the betrayed partners imagination tends to run wild - but unfortunately I have also come to know a little more details than I should, and the intrusive thoughts are relentless and profoundly distressing. Amongst all the painful layers of the betrayal - this is the one that deprives me of hope. I’m really struggling to believe that this specific pain can be integrated or healed.
